Through my work I investigate the
conceptual and formal issues of painting, and the complex
relationships these components create.
I begin my process by drawing directly onto the canvas or
panel with ink and oil paint. At times I adhere to these drawings,
like a blueprint, as I create the painting; at other times,
I deconstruct these drawings in the process of making the
painting. I use the process of drawing and gestural mark making
to begin the synthesis of conceptual and formal elements.
I use textured fabrics with oil paint to complicate the surface
and to signify physicality- imply the body's skin- torn, scraped,
and smoothed. The process of construction, deconstruction,
and eventual reconstruction in my painting is an integral
part of my process as it leaves imprints of marks and a visible
history of painting.
I use memory as a starting point
to investigate a visceral and contemporary female experience
of loss, struggle, and reflection. I portray the rawness of
a lived memory. I work abstract and figurative imagery into
textured surfaces blurring the line between figurative and
abstract allows me to further develop the visual language
of my paintings by.
