Artist Statement


 

Through my work I investigate the conceptual and formal issues of painting, and the complex relationships these components create.
I begin my process by drawing directly onto the canvas or panel with ink and oil paint. At times I adhere to these drawings, like a blueprint, as I create the painting; at other times, I deconstruct these drawings in the process of making the painting. I use the process of drawing and gestural mark making to begin the synthesis of conceptual and formal elements. I use textured fabrics with oil paint to complicate the surface and to signify physicality- imply the body's skin- torn, scraped, and smoothed. The process of construction, deconstruction, and eventual reconstruction in my painting is an integral part of my process as it leaves imprints of marks and a visible history of painting.

I use memory as a starting point to investigate a visceral and contemporary female experience of loss, struggle, and reflection. I portray the rawness of a lived memory. I work abstract and figurative imagery into textured surfaces blurring the line between figurative and abstract allows me to further develop the visual language of my paintings by.
